Most cyberattacks don’t happen because a hacker “guessed” a complex password. They happen because someone clicked a link in an email that looked like it came from their boss, a trusted vendor, or a donor. For a non-profit or a small business, these attacks known as Phishing exploit the very thing that makes your organization great: your desire to be helpful and responsive.

To strengthen your human firewall, look for these three red flags before you click:

• The “Spear” in the Phish: Does the email address look right? Attackers often use addresses that are almost correct, like billing@amazon-support.net instead of amazon.com. Hover your mouse over the sender’s name to see the real address hiding underneath.
• Manufactured Panic: Phrases like “Immediate action required,” “Your account will be suspended in 2 hours,” or “I need you to buy these gift cards for a donor right now” are designed to make you stop thinking and start clicking.
• The Unusual Request: If your Executive Director suddenly emails you asking for a wire transfer or a sensitive employee file and they’ve never done that via email before, pick up the phone. A 30-second “Did you send this?” call can save your organization thousands of dollars.

Your Mission This Week

Cybersecurity isn’t just an IT task; it’s a culture. This week, start the conversation with your team:

• Normalize Doubts: Tell your staff it is okay (and encouraged!) to question an email that feels “off.”
• Report, Don’t Hide: If someone does click a suspicious link, make sure they know who to tell immediately. Fast action is the difference between a minor hiccup and a total lockout.
